Robertas’s House: A Road to Healing
American Funeral Director 2023 Issue
The one thing anyone who has experienced a death understands is that grief is bone crushing. It takes an emotional and physical toll that those who have not experienced such a loss can never fully comprehend. In this month’s issue, we are sharing stories of people who understand grief all too well. Funeral director Annette-March Grier founded Roberta’s House in Baltimore on the idea that everyone deserves a safe space to heal from grief. When Steven Knight’s first-born child was killed in a tragic accident, he and his family founded a nonprofit to keep Elijah’s life – and message of kindness – alive.
The State of Grief Report:
COVID-19’s Impact on Bereavement Support in America
“We are challenged to re-think mental wellness and support for youth and families who have experienced and witnessed multiple losses. We must be open and learn from those most impacted, especially in Black and Brown communities that have historically experienced loss through racial injustices, poverty, educational inequalities, and trust. Greater access to resources for diverse populations is critical, and current grief theories need to be re-evaluated.”

A CNN Hero and grief counselor has advice on speaking to children about the Uvalde massacre
“A caring adult support is really needed to help children understand their feelings, their emotions, and to be able to answer those questions that kids might be asking as a result of this,” said Annette March-Grier, a 2014 CNN Hero and founder of Roberta’s House, a grief and bereavement center in Baltimore, Maryland.
Hope after Loss:
A Conversation with Roberta’s House
Laura Wood was shy when she joined her first support group session with Roberta’s House. She was weighed down by grief and nervous about sharing something so personal and painful with a group of strangers on zoom. Each of the women on the call was learning to cope with their own loss but by coming together, to share their experiences, stories, and compassion, they hoped to help each other heal.
