Archdiocese of Baltimore: Faith In Baltimore Honors Roberta’s House President and Co-Founder Annette March-Grier

ACF Assistant Secretary January Contreras and Assistant Secretary for Health Admiral Rachel Levine toured Roberta’s House in Baltimore, Maryland. They saw first-hand how this community-based resource is helping residents of Baltimore, especially children, process the grief and loss of a parent or caregiver.

Roberta’s House is a Baltimore-based non-profit that provides trauma-informed care and addresses grief as a public health service. We believe all children, adults, and families suffering the loss or death of a loved one should have support and a safe place to heal and recover.

The one thing anyone who has experienced a death understands is that grief is bone crushing. It takes an emotional and physical toll that those who have not experienced such a loss can never fully comprehend. In this month’s issue, we are sharing stories of people who understand grief all too well. Funeral director Annette-March Grier founded Roberta’s House in Baltimore on the idea that everyone deserves a safe space to heal from grief. When Steven Knight’s first-born child was killed in a tragic accident, he and his family founded a nonprofit to keep Elijah’s life – and message of kindness – alive.

“We are challenged to re-think mental wellness and support for youth and families who have experienced and witnessed multiple losses. We must be open and learn from those most impacted, especially in Black and Brown communities that have historically experienced loss through racial injustices, poverty, educational inequalities, and trust. Greater access to resources for diverse populations is critical, and current grief theories need to be re-evaluated.”
